Chancellor Cantor is Among Co-Authors of Carnegie Report on Transforming Postsecondary Eduction

Rutgers-Newark Chancellor Nancy Cantor, a member of the Carnegie Postsecondary Commission, joined in announcing the release of its first report, which emphasizes making higher education more accessible to underserved students and prioritizing career readiness.

Titled  “Revitalizing Higher Education: A Blueprint for Transformative Change,” the report proposes innovative solutions for financial aid and funding models and advocates for a shift towards professional pathways, including internships, apprenticeships and other opportunities.

“Higher education is an engine of opportunity and it’s up to all of our institutions to assure that we break down the financial barriers that too many students face in gaining access to it,’’ Cantor said. “In a world where the stakes for earning a college degree continue to rise, it's crucial that we transform our institutions to make good on higher education’s promise while strengthening our connections to the communities we call home.”

The Carnegie Foundation created the commission, and appointed Cantor as one of several commissioners, last year to focus on helping underrepresented and under-resourced students achieve goals and secure careers.

Comprised of diverse leaders in higher education as well as K12, the commission aims to identify the most effective ways to help millions of low-income, underrepresented, and first-generation college students.

This is the first of a series of reports from the commission, which aims to make the postsecondary sector a more vital foundation for upward mobility and economic opportunity.
