All-day program on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Rutgers School of Law–Newark will feature experts in the areas of education, psychology, medicine, behavioral health, criminal justice and law, and community partners and agencies serving the needs of children and families. "Rethinking Discipline: Creating a Pipeline from School to Success" is sponsored by the Law School and Rutgers School of Criminal Justice, in conjunction with the Rutgers University–Newark Department of Urban Education and the Family Support Organization of Essex County.

School district administrators, child study team members, teachers, court and legal stakeholders, child welfare and juvenile justice professionals, mental health professionals, school district parent leaders, and others whose work impacts students are encouraged to attend.

The symposium is free but registration is required at http://law.newark.rutgers.edu/pipeline2015.

This symposium is a response to the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Justice’s Supportive School Discipline Initiative, which seeks to promote school discipline practices that keep students in school by fostering “safe, supportive and productive learning environments.” The Initiative also aims to bring together stakeholders in education and other disciplines to collaborate on ways to reduce the disproportionate removal rates of students of color and students with disabilities from the school environment.
