Throughout the year, Rutgers University–Newark maintains its longstanding commitment to serving and uplifting the Newark community.  During the holiday season, university members recognize that if we are to combat the colder nights, scarcer resources, and increased isolation that some of our neighbors are experiencing at this time of the year, increased efforts must be made.

NJ State Employees Charitable Campaign

Every year, the faculty and staff members of Rutgers University support the NJ State Employees Charitable Campaign, pledging to donate money from payroll deductions or making one-time contributions to New Jersey charities of their choosing. This year, Rutgers University-Newark members raised more than $31,000 for the campaign to support various populations, including homeless individuals, veterans, families who are struggling financially, and victims of domestic violence.

The School of Public Affairs and Administration

The School of Public Affairs and Administration made one family’s Christmas brighter this December through its participation in the Adopt-A-Family program. In the months leading up to Christmas, SPAA collected approximately $800 to buy kitchen appliances, clothing, and toiletries for a low-income mother with four children.

In addition to the Adopt-A-Family program, faculty, staff, and students donated their time for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. On Dec. 6, SPAA members took shifts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to contribute to the Salvation Army’s leading fundraiser.

Office of Housing & Residence Life

This Thanksgiving, the Office of Housing & Residence Life gave thanks for its university family. The office hosted a holiday dinner for approximately 20 students who were unable to spend the day with their loved ones.

Continuing its commitment to families, the office also participated in the Adopt-A-Family program, and was able to support two families this winter by providing gifts, canned goods, and other supplies.

Paul Robeson Campus Center: Office of the Dean of Student life

The Paul Robeson Campus Center: Office of the Dean of Student Life served as Rutgers University–Newark’s coordinator for the Adopt-A-Family program, successfully connecting departments with families in need. At the conclusion of this year’s program, 34 departments participated and helped a total of 36 families.

The department also organized Rutgers University-Newark’s Service Day, registering 90 students and 12 alumni to perform acts of community service at locations throughout Newark.

Rutgers University Alumni Association

On Oct. 25 (National Make a Difference Day), Rutgers University–Newark alumni and students came together for Service Day to improve the spaces in Newark for living, learning, and recreation. Participants traveled to seven locations in Newark, including Branch Brook Park and Goodwill Rescue Mission, where they engaged in projects through gardening, painting classrooms, and serving meals to community members. The effort in Newark was organized by the Paul Robeson Campus Center: Office of the Dean of Student Life and co-sponsored by the Rutgers University Alumni Association.

Recently, the office also donated jackets, boots, toys, and bedding to a family in the Adopt-A-Family program.
