NEWARK, NJ — Today, Express Newark announced the official launch of its new website, expressnewark.org.
Occupying 50,000 square feet of the renovated, historic Hahne & Company building in the heart of Newark’s downtown, Express Newark is described as a “Third Space” collaboratory. Together, Newark artists, community residents, arts organizations, Rutgers University–Newark faculty, staff, and students work in tandem to incubate talent, cultivate engaged scholarship, and promote social practice. As an arts incubator, Express Newark fosters a creative space to convene, experiment, and innovate in partnership with Rutgers University–Newark. With a focus on arts, entrepreneurship, and social justice, Express Newark houses a variety of university and community partners. Additionally, Express Newark offers many opportunities for collaboration: college courses, internships, workshops to the public, and artist residencies. Express Newark provides state-of-the-art interdisciplinary public learning spaces where artists, community residents, and community partners create visual, spoken word, and electronic arts; foster democratic dialogue; and effect positive transformation. “A year in the making, expressnewark.org is a 'one-stop-shop,' interactive resource to engage with Express Newark, whether to promote a public event or exhibit; reserve Shine portrait studio, a classroom, conference room, or the lecture hall; see the latest exhibit; register for a class; locate community partners; or showcasecontributors,” shared Express Newark Co-Directors Anne Schaper Englot and Victor Davson. Level Group (levelnyc.com), an award-winning, full-service creative agency that specializes in strategy and cross-media brand experiences, designed and developedexpressnewark.org and received a 2019 American Web Design Award forexpressnewark.org. The design and user experience of expressnewark.org mirror the ecosystem of Express Newark – one of inclusiveness, democratic dialogue, and boundary-crossing networks, consisting of contributors who span diverse disciplines and collaborate and engage in public work and creative practice. Presently, Express Newark has more than 80 contributors, and its partners includeArtistic Passion & Purpose, Community Media Center, Design Consortium, Form Design Studio, Humanities Action Lab, Institute of Jazz Studies, NewAnce, New Arts Justice, Newest Americans, Paul Robeson Galleries, Shine Portrait Studio, andVisual Means. Located at 54 Halsey Street, Express Newark anchors the Hahne & Company building along with Whole Foods.
